Chapter 22

1 JOSIAH was eight years old when he began to reign, and he reigned thirty-one years in Jerusalem. And his mother's name was Jedidah, the daughter of Azariah of Boscath.

2 And he did that which was right in the sight of the LORD, and walked in all the way of David his father, and did not turn aside to the right hand or to the left.

3 Now in the eighteenth year of King Josiah, the king sent Shaphan the son of Alaziah, the son of Meshullam, the scribe, to the house of the LORD, saying,

4 Go up to Hilkiah the high priest that he may deliver the silver which has been brought into the house of the LORD, which the keepers of the door have collected from the people;

5 And let them deliver it into the hand of the workmen who have the oversight of the house of the LORD: and let them give it to the doers of the work which is in the house of the LORD, to repair the breaches of the house,

6 To the carpenters and to the builders and masons, and to buy timber and hewn stone to repair the house of the LORD.

7 However there was no accounting made with them of the money that was delivered into their hands, because they dealt faithfully.

8 And Hilkiah the high priest said to Shaphan the scribe, I have found the book of the law in the house of the LORD. And Hilkiah gave the book of the law to Shaphan the scribe and he read it.

9 And Shaphan the scribe came to the king, and brought the king word again, saying, Your servants have delivered the money that was found in the house, and have delivered it into the hand of the workmen who have the oversight of the house of the LORD.

10 And Shaphan the scribe spoke to the king, saying, Hilkiah the priest has given me a book. And Shaphan read it before the king.

11 And when the king had heard the words of the book of the law, he tore his clothes.

12 And the king commanded Hilkiah the priest and Ahikam the son of Shaphan and Achbor the son of Micah and Shaphan the scribe and Ashaiah a servant of the king, saying,

13 Go, inquire of the LORD for me and for all the people and for all Judah concerning the words of this book that has been found; for great is the wrath of the LORD that is kindled against us, because our fathers have not hearkened to the words of this book, to do according to all that which is written in it.

14 So Hilkiah the priest and Ahikam and Achbor and Shaphan and Ashaiah went to Huldi the prophetess, the wife of Shallum the son of Tikvah, the son of Hadhas, the keeper of the weapons (now she dwelt in Jerusalem studying the Law), and they talked with her.

15 And she said to them, Thus says the LORD God of Israel: Tell the man who sent you to me,

16 Thus says the LORD: Behold, I will bring evil upon this country and upon its inhabitants, even all the words of the book which the king of Judah has read,

17 Because they have forsaken me and have burned incense to other gods and have provoked me to anger with all the works of their hands; therefore my wrath shall be kindled against this place and I shall destroy you, says the LORD.

18 But to the king of Judah who sent you to inquire of the LORD, thus shall you say to him: Thus says the LORD God of Israel concerning the words which you have heard:

19 Because your heart was sad and you trembled before the LORD when you heard what I spoke against this country and against its inhabitants, that they should become a desolation and a curse, and have torn your clothes and wept before me; I also have heard you, says the LORD.

20 Behold, therefore, I will gather you to your fathers, and you shall be gathered into your grave in peace; and your eyes shall not see all the evil which I will bring upon this country. And they brought the king word again.

5 And let them deliver5414 it into5921 the hand3027 of the doers6213 of the work,4399 that have the oversight6485 of the house1004 of the LORD:3068 and let them give5414 it to the doers6213 of the work4399 which834 is in the house1004 of the LORD,3068 to repair2388 the breaches919 of the house,1004

6 To carpenters,2796 and builders,1129 and masons,1443 and to buy7069 timber6086 and hewn4274 stone68 to repair2388 the house.1004

7 However, there was no3808 reckoning2803 made with them of the money3701 that was delivered5414 into5921 their hand,3027 because3588 they dealt6213 faithfully.530

8 And Hilkiah2518 the high1419 priest3548 said559 to Shaphan8227 the scribe,5608 I have found4672 the book5612 of the law8451 in the house1004 of the LORD.3068 And Hilkiah2518 gave5414 the book5612 to Shaphan,8227 and he read7121 it.

9 And Shaphan8227 the scribe5608 came935 to the king,4428 and brought7725 the king4428 word1697 again,7725 and said,559 Your servants5650 have gathered5413 the money3701 that was found4672 in the house,1004 and have delivered5414 it into5921 the hand3027 of them that do6213 the work,4399 that have the oversight6485 of the house1004 of the LORD.3068

10 And Shaphan8227 the scribe5608 showed7200 the king,4428 saying,559 Hilkiah2518 the priest3548 has delivered5414 me a book.5612 And Shaphan8227 read7121 it before6440 the king.4428

11 And it came1961 to pass, when the king4428 had heard8085 the words1697 of the book5612 of the law,8451 that he rent7167 his clothes.899

12 And the king4428 commanded6680 Hilkiah2518 the priest,3548 and Ahikam296 the son1121 of Shaphan,8227 and Achbor5907 the son1121 of Michaiah,4320 and Shaphan8227 the scribe,5608 and Asahiah6222 a servant5650 of the king's,4428 saying,559

13 Go3212 you, inquire1875 of the LORD3068 for me, and for the people,5971 and for all3605 Judah,3063 concerning5921 the words1697 of this2088 book5612 that is found:4672 for great1419 is the wrath2534 of the LORD3068 that is kindled3341 against us, because3282 834 our fathers1 have not listened8085 to the words1697 of this2088 book,5612 to do6213 according to all3605 that which is written3789 concerning5921 us.

14 So Hilkiah2518 the priest,3548 and Ahikam,296 and Achbor,5907 and Shaphan,8227 and Asahiah,6222 went3212 to Huldah2468 the prophetess,5031 the wife802 of Shallum7967 the son1121 of Tikvah,8616 the son1121 of Harhas,2745 keeper8104 of the wardrobe;899 (now she dwelled3427 in Jerusalem3389 in the college;4932) and they communed1696 with her.

15 And she said559 to them, Thus3541 said559 the LORD3068 God430 of Israel,3478 Tell559 the man376 that sent7971 you to me,

16 Thus3541 said559 the LORD,3068 Behold,2005 I will bring935 evil7451 on this2088 place,4725 and on the inhabitants3427 thereof, even all3605 the words1697 of the book5612 which834 the king4428 of Judah3063 has read:7121

17 Because8478 834 they have forsaken5800 me, and have burned6999 incense6999 to other312 gods,430 that they might provoke me to anger3707 with all3605 the works4639 of their hands;3027 therefore my wrath2534 shall be kindled3341 against this2088 place,4725 and shall not be quenched.3518

18 But to the king4428 of Judah3063 which sent7971 you to inquire1875 of the LORD,3068 thus3541 shall you say559 to him, Thus3541 said559 the LORD3068 God430 of Israel,3478 As touching the words1697 which834 you have heard;8085

19 Because3282 your heart3824 was tender,7401 and you have humbled3665 yourself before6440 the LORD,3068 when you heard8085 what834 I spoke1696 against5921 this2088 place,4725 and against5921 the inhabitants3427 thereof, that they should become1961 a desolation8047 and a curse,7045 and have rent7167 your clothes,899 and wept1058 before6440 me; I also1571 have heard8085 you, said5002 the LORD.3068

20 Behold2005 therefore,3651 I will gather622 you to your fathers,1 and you shall be gathered622 into413 your grave6913 in peace;7965 and your eyes5869 shall not see7200 all3605 the evil7451 which834 I will bring935 on this2088 place.4725 And they brought7725 the king4428 word1697 again.7725

8 And Hilkiah the high priest said to Shaphan the scribe, I have found the book of the law in the house of the LORD. And Hilkiah gave the book of the law to Shaphan the scribe and he read it.

13 Go, inquire of the LORD for me and for all the people and for all Judah concerning the words of this book that has been found; for great is the wrath of the LORD that is kindled against us, because our fathers have not hearkened to the words of this book, to do according to all that which is written in it.

16 Thus3541 said559 the LORD,3068 Behold,2005 I will bring935 evil7451 on this2088 place,4725 and on the inhabitants3427 thereof, even all3605 the words1697 of the book5612 which834 the king4428 of Judah3063 has read:7121

17 Because they have forsaken me and have burned incense to other gods and have provoked me to anger with all the works of their hands; therefore my wrath shall be kindled against this place and I shall destroy you, says the LORD.

18 But to the king of Judah who sent you to inquire of the LORD, thus shall you say to him: Thus says the LORD God of Israel concerning the words which you have heard:

18 But to the king4428 of Judah3063 which sent7971 you to inquire1875 of the LORD,3068 thus3541 shall you say559 to him, Thus3541 said559 the LORD3068 God430 of Israel,3478 As touching the words1697 which834 you have heard;8085

20 Behold, therefore, I will gather you to your fathers, and you shall be gathered into your grave in peace; and your eyes shall not see all the evil which I will bring upon this country. And they brought the king word again.
